Letter 17: You are not a superhuman, you are just an insomniac
Sleep, rest, life is short.
I know you might have probably heard about statements like this:
If you want to succeed in life, you must not sleep for so-so-and-so hours, or something like, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, and other successful people don’t sleep. (More like, the reason why the successful people succeeded was because they slept for a very short period or they never slept at all)
And I know you must have heard that thought in your head for a couple of times that if only you can be awake all through the nights, your life will experience a drastic change.
But, my friend.
It is not that straight forward.
Trust me, if you have the chance to meet the Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Femi Otedola, and other notable figures around. They will tell you an entire different story from the ones you have been hearing.
I don’t think there is a theory yet to justify why “not sleeping” is a major pathway to wealth.
What do I mean?
It is not about the number of times you deprive yourself of sleep. And there is hardly a correlation between refusal to sleep and rest and success.
Sleep is a major part of our makeup as human.
And that is why at a particular hour of the day, there is always this tiredness and need to sleep that every human feels.
Also, after a very long hour of work, your body system automatically demands rest. Why?, because you are not a robot.
And I am of the school of thought that God who created us, instilled the capacity to be tired and feel the need to rest for a reason.
And also, resting is a part of our makeup as human, and if you somehow try to reconfigure yourself into being awake all the time at nights. It will work, you will be awake and at some point you will be used to, but there is always a price to pay.
Aside from the fact that it is not medically cool, it also affects your creativity and productive. (Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, I am only making reference to what I know)
That being said, the next question now is, how do you now navigate your life.
You don’t want to be a mechanic, you want to be a baller. I know.
That is when finding a balance comes in.
I have attached an image and reference from Forbes.
So, you can see for yourself.
So, Ladi from Isale Eko, the next Forbes 30 under 30 will not happen because of deprivation of sleep.
Sleep, Rest, Take A Nap.
You need it, you are not a robot.
